Tybalt Perdition by John Cordial

This is the story of a water fairy born from a shipwreck who helps a fox god escape the wrath of a wolf god. Caldyr, the fairy, has a take-no-prisoners personality with extremely strong water magic to back it up. Reynardine, the fox god, is a flirty, selfish trickster god. The story feels like a buddy cop movie in book form with a lot of supernatural elements mixed in.

It took a little while to get into this and it seemed a little overly edgy at first (the characters have a similar rapport to those in The Magicians show where they can seem unnecessarily prickly) but I really enjoyed this the more it went on as I got to know the characters and care more about them.

There were some parts of the world-building that were a little hard to understand, but I feel like they probably get explained later in the series (this is book 0 of the Glass Fate series, the other books aren’t out yet but there are a lot of stories in that universe on John Cordial’s blog). Caldyr starts out in a place called Fryhel which is fictional, but then moves to Northern California, so I’m not sure where Fryhel is relative to there or how she got from there to the real world.

Anyway, the fight scenes are badass and the ending is awesome!

I’d recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy, especially urban fantasy.

And also check out John Cordial’s Twitter account, that’s how I first heard of him and he posts a lot of fun stuff!

(also, the book is free with Kindle Unlimited!)
