The end of summer is coming…
Fall always feels like a time of reckoning.
Harvest.
Counting up what happened in the year, good and bad, and getting the books in order for winter.
Last year I wrote 19 book reviews on this site and started the Diverse Reading Challenge with The Tale of Genji. It’s about 1000 pages, so I’m thinking of breaking it up into 300 page chunks. Reading Tales of Moonlight and Rain got me more into Japanese fiction so I’m going to try and continue with that.
My favorites from this year were Best of Apex Magazine (so underrated!) and The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison. I still need to finish the Broken Earth Trilogy — I have the other two books in the series but I haven’t cracked them open yet.
I also have a lot of political theory books on my shelf that feel very relevant to discourse so hopefully I’ll get to them soon (Why Marx Was Right, What is to be Done?, and The Conquest of Bread to start with… and also Against Creativity because that looks interesting).
I’m still in my scifi book club, but this year I really got tired of narrow-perspective technologically-driven scifi, especially with We Are Legion, so we’ll see what happens there…
I’m also hoping to get back to doing some of my own writing, even if it doesn’t go anywhere. I got some Nintendo sticker books from Target to put on the calendar as motivation for writing (or, more likely, staring at a page blank page) for 30 minutes a day.
